Tavriel and his twin sister Maylise were born to extremely poor yet loving parents. Their parents managed to scrape enough money together to buy a house. It wasn't the best place, and it was located in the bad part of town, but it was theirs. Still life was hard. There were times when they couldn't afford the bare necessities like food and often had to wear clothes that had been patch worked together. Yet, despite this Tavriel was happy. He knew his parents loved his sister and him and were doing everything they could to provide for their children with the means they had. His parents didn't believe this was enough. They regarded themselves as failures who couldn't provide their children with the life they deserved. This was clearer when Tavriel and Maylise's birthday and Christmas rolled around.
When they were eight their father managed to gather enough money to give them what he thought was the ideal Christmas. A large tree with tons of presents only for them. Stockings overflowing with goodies and a Christmas dinner with all the fixings. They asked their father how he managed to pull it off. He just smiled at them and said it was a Christmas miracle. A year later, they would learn the truth. They were stopped by a gang while they were out for a walk. A man of clear otherworldly origins stepped out from behind the rest and begun speaking to their father, demanding that he paid back the money that he lent him a year ago to give his two lovely children a wonderful Christmas. Their father, however, didn't have the money to pay him back. The man demanded that their father find the money to which their father replied that it was impossible to pull money out of thin air. The pair bicker back and forth for a while until the man decided that he would extract his payment in other ways.

The man told their father to pay his debt, or he would have his children raped until he thought the debt sufficiently paid. Their father pleaded with the man to give him some time to gather the money. He swore he wasn't trying to neglect his loan, but he needed a little time to gather the money. He even offered to make payments. This, however, was not satisfactory to the man and he proceeded to have his goons rape Tavriel and Maylise. Their mother unable to stand the horrors being inflicted upon her children broke free of the man holding onto her and attempted to save them from what was happening. Her attempts would fall short because as soon as she started pulling the man who had been harming Tavriel off him she was shot in the head by the leader. He then had her dead body defiled. He believed the horrors of what his children were being forced to endure as well as the disrespect being inflicted upon his wife's dead body would be enough to convince their father to give the man what he wanted.
It, however, became clear that this wasn't going to be the case. Their father looked upon the scene with empty eyes. The man merely shrugged and returned his attention back to Tavriel and Maylise. Tavriel no longer be able to stand his sister being hurt, broke free of the man who was harming him and stabbed the leader right into the eye with a knife he had stolen from the one he had just broken free from. He used the brief moment of distraction that this caused to grab his sister and flee into the dead of night. He was certain their attackers wouldn't be far behind them, but the last sound of their presence they heard was a gunshot that allowed them to know that their father shared their mother's fate. They roamed the street for some time in a state of shock before the realization that they were now orphans hit them.
Tavriel knew that they should go to the authorities. Even if they didn't tell them exactly what happened they could help them find a new home. However, he didn't want a new home. He wanted the one he had. More than that he was terrified of being separated from his sister, and for these reasons Maylise and he decided that it was best if embarked on their own. If life had been hard before it was now worse, but for seven years they somehow managed to survive on their own.

However, when a man approached him, offering to pay for Maylise medical expense he believed that luck was on his side. The man made it perfectly clear that he wasn't doing this out of the kindness of his heart and expected Tavriel to become his lover in exchange for the man paying for Maylise medical bill. Tavriel didn't hesitate to agree. He would sell his own soul to save his sister even to the very same demon who had killed his parents. Tavriel might have convinced himself that he didn't recognize the man but deep down he knew. Besides, he was no stranger to using his body to gain things Maylise and he might need. He even thought about prostituting himself out to a few people in order to at least buy his sister medicine. The man, however, made it clear this wasn't going to be a short-term arrangement and had Tavriel shipped off to his estate while Maylise was sent to the best hospital money could buy.
